Mai undertakes educational, environmental and community-based research programmes with supporting evaluation and report writing for charity funded and not for profit projects. These have included the Arts Council England, Esmée Fairburn and Paul Hamlyn, The National Trust, The Princes Foundation for Children and the Arts and Betsi Cadwalader Health Board Trust and The Earth Project.

Mai completed a PhD with the University of Wales in 2018.
